At the Crawford Cup February 4-7, 2016 in Ft. Lauderdale FL, the wind and cold attacked us. There was only one team in the 85+ division: Rosie Asch and her partner, Louise Russ, who faced the “Gold Slammers”: me and my partner, Jane Lutz. In the first set Jane and I skimmed to a 6-4 score. By the second set, things changed and we drew ahead to 6-1. In singles, Rosie had to go three sets to beat Jane, with the wind playing a spoiler. Jane took only a short time to oust both me and Louise, dropping only three games. I won over Louise in two sets: 6-1, 6-4. Louise almost took me to a third set! Whew! The volunteers and director did a fine job keeping the matches “full speed ahead” in spite of rain. The banquet was delightful with prizes, good food, music and dancing. I had a blast on the clay and it sets me up for the first Clay Court National in Houston where 90-year-olds will compete! I’m gonna play there again!
